TABRIZ
In 1722, following the Afghan invasion, the Safavid dynasty was overthrown. For about the next one and a half centuries, Persia was in a state of some political confusion. In 1736, the Afghan leader Nadir Kuli ascended the throne. In 1747, however, he was assassinated, and from 1750 to 1779 the country was under the regency of Kerim Khan Zand. He, in turn, was overthrown by Agar Muhammed Khan Kajar, founder of the Kajar dynasty, which lasted until the revolution and ascension to the throne of Riza Khan, father of the last Shah, in 1925. Despite these political upheavals it has been suggested that the real revival, or rather the conversion of weaving into a major export industry, began under the influence of Tabriz merchants in 1875 and has remained strong ever since.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Tabriz continued to produce carpets based on Safavid designs. This century the carpets woven in Tabriz still adhere to the original designs but have obviously been modified to suit contemporary demands.
