ENGLISH AXMINISTER
Thomas Whitty established his early workshop at Axminster in Devon in the early 1700's. Just before this there had been a massive increase of interest in the possibility of manufacturing pile carpets on a commercial scale in England, started by two weavers who fled the French apprenticeship system having worked for Savonnerie. By 1760 there were three commercial ventures in operation, Claude Passavet in Exeter, Thomas Moore at Moorefields in London and Thomas Whitty in Axminster. The first quickly went out of business. Thomas Moore continued until around 1790, but it was Whitty, whose company continued in various guises, including a transfer of location to Wilton England into the present century.

The Whitty Axminster carpets were only woven for important patrons. The designs for these carpets were drawn by the best-known designers of the time such as Robert Adam, to compliment the interiors of the houses he was building. A number of these carpets have been preserved by the families in the stately homes for which they were woven
