BRUSSELS
Raphael's famous Acts of the Apostles, delivered by Van Aelst to the Vatican in 1519, established the prestige of Brussels workshops and a pictorial style in tapestries. This accelerated certain changes, such as deepening perspectives and a central focus of interest. Tapestries became more like windows. The most successful designer in the new manner, Bernard Van Orley, whose exuberant style blended the Italian and Flemish traditions. Material conditions as well as talented designers contributed to the supremacy of Brussels. The rulers of the low countries preferred to make their residence there, attracting the courtiers and distinguished patrons necessary to support this luxury industry. The Renaissance brought an increasingly secular viewpoint, which fairly reflected the patron's new interests and attitudes. Their principle types chosen were Triumphs, Heroes and Verdures. In accordance with an ordinance of 16th May 1528, each tapestry woven in Brussels, of a certain size, had to have the Brussels town mark woven in, as well as the mark for the weaver or whoever had commissioned it. The town mark consists of a plain red shield with a capital letter "B" on each side, which is understood to stand for Brabant-Brussels.

DUTCH
The Inventaire General des Meubles de las Couronne under Louis XIV mentions a series of tapestries representing vases of flowers and palm leaves with a white background and a brown border decorated with foliage and fruits. The inventory does not include the origin of the tapestries but they are likely to be of Dutch or Franco-Flemish manufacture. The Hermitage Museum, which owns one of the largest known tapestries of this type, has attributed it to the Dutch workshops in Delft (see J. Guiffrey, Inventaire du Mobilier de la Couronne sous Louis XIV, vol.1, Paris, 1885).
